Kuala Lumpur

While many cities can boast of being a mix of old and new, Kuala Lumpur has its own way of doing it. The giant towers of glass and aluminum steal the show. In fact, included in these towers is some quite striking architecture rather than just enormous shiny boxes. Look down though. In the foreground, with the modern buildings behind them are the colonial shophouses of Chinatown and Little India. Most of these are less then 100 years old and speak of a not-to-distant colonial past while behind them, enormous and shiny, are the symbols of the new Malaysia. And speaking of Chinatown and Little India, it seems that three distinct cultures and at least four religions get along quite well here, mixing in the workplaces as well as in public.
